I’m new. Do I need my own equipment?2023-02-02T22:01:18+13:00

Sabers

Most of our groups have limited loaner sabers that you can ask to borrow ahead of time. We ask that all loaner requests are made 24 hours prior to the session so the organiser can ensure there are enough loaners available. If for any reason, you’re not able to attend, please cancel with the group organiser as soon as possible.

Eyewear

Your first couple of sessions are designed to be a gentle introduction into the saber community. If you have eyewear (a pair of safety specs for example) please bring them. After your first couple of sessions, once things get a little more advanced, you will be expected to bring a pair of impact rated safety eyewear, complete with a strap to secure the eyewear to your head (a bit like squash players wear).

Gloves

Again, your first couple of sessions will be a gentle introduction into the saber community, focussing on basic form and safety. If you have a pair of gloves (a pair of mountain bike gloves for example) please bring them. After your first couple of sessions, once things get a little more advanced, you will be expected to source and wear a pair of full fingered impact gloves with full finger armour protection.

What will it cost me?2023-02-02T22:31:13+13:00

All of our groups are non-profit. Groups that use suitable covered public spaces will usually be free to attend. There is no additional charge to use loaner sabers whilst you attend your first series of sessions, but you are expected to work towards getting your long term equipment together.

If a group has opted to rent a commercial sports facility to ensure they are not weather dependent, there may be a cost to attend. Once again, these saber meets are run on a non-profit basis and the fee is purely to cover the facility hire. This is typically $5.00 – $10.00 per person, per attendance.

Is there an age limit or any other restrictions?2023-02-02T22:30:04+13:00

Groups have free reign to set their own age limit for attendance. Our saber meets are usually focussed on adult attendance. A lot of groups will set an age limit of 14+ years for attendance, especially those groups focussed on competition, but there are exceptions. Just check the details on your local saber group.

Any attendee noticeable under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be asked to leave.

What kind of lightsaber do I need?2023-02-02T22:30:24+13:00

That’s a very good question! Lightsaber technology can vary. Neopixel tech’ is usually suited for choreography and collecting, whereas duelers will usually opt for more robust RGB baselit lightsaber builds.

Sulphur City Sabers has an excellent video on the subject.
